This course is about becoming fluent in the essential techniques of Black & White photography. Assignments form the basis for course sessions covering the following topics:-

In-depth study of the camera - creative use of its functions, Essential darkroom practice, The use of different film and developer combinations and their effect on the final image. Composition - light, tonal massing, balance and tension, graphic elements, spacing, etc. Photography appreciation through viewing the works of some master photographers in slides and prints.
The course will provide a solid foundation in the methods of camera and darkroom. You will also explore your own photographic direction and personal aesthetic.

Content: Assignments form the basis for classroom sessions covering the following topics:-

In-depth study of the camera - creative use of its functions.
Essential darkroom practice.
The use of different film and developer combinations and their effect on the final image.
Photography appreciation through viewing the works of some master photographers in slides and prints.
Composition - light, tonal massing, balance and tension, graphic elements, spacing, etc.
Prerequisite: A basic level of photographic knowledge such as will be gained
from our introductory workshop.
A functioning camera and some way of measuring light if a meter is not built in. If your camera is fully automatic you should also be able to operate it in manual mode, or at least set the ISO manually and have an auto-exposure locking system.
You will: This course is about becoming fluent in the essential techniques of straight B/W photography. It will provide a solid foundation in the methods of camera and darkroom use, combining a "nuts and bolts" craft approach with building solid habits. You will also explore your own photographic direction and personal aesthetic.
What to bring: Participants will be required to bring:
- 100 sheet box of 10 x 8 inch RC (resin coated) photographic paper - gloss or pearl
- buy 10 rolls of black and white film (Ilford HP5 24 exp)
Follow-up classes: Any of the advanced workshops or courses.
